Ministries

Eucharistic Ministers

Eucharistic ministers are needed at both weekday and weekend liturgies. Parishioners are invited by the pastor to assist with the distribution of the Eucharist at Mass. Some ministers also take communion to the sick and homebound. A training session, through the Diocesan Office of Worship, is provided. Both aspects of this ministry are essential to the parish and offer the laity an opportunity for participation and service.

Altar Servers

Servers assist at week-end Masses, weddings, funerals and special Altar Serverscelebrations. This ministry is open to boys and girls grade 5 and older. Training sessions are provided for new servers. Altar servers enjoy a day at the Paddock golf dome in December and a Buffalo Bisons game in June. Contact Mrs. Andy Cammarata for more information.

Funeral Altar Servers

Adults are needed on week days to assist at funerals. Please contact the rectory if you are interested in volunteering for this ministry.

Ushers

Ushers serve as ministers of hospitality welcoming all who come to worship. In addition to taking up the weekly offering, ushers direct the flow of those approaching the altar for Holy Communion. Please call the rectory to volunteer for this ministry.

Music Ministry

Music MinistrySt. John’s Music Minister is directed by Cheryl Brinker. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30pm in the church from September to mid June. The choir sings Sunday mornings at the 10:00am liturgy.

The Youth Ensemble rehearses at 11:15am on Sunday mornings for the 12 noon mass. High school and college students are invited to participate.

Volunteers make up the Resurrection Choir which sings at funerals and memorial masses.

Bereavement

The Bereavement Committee offers the sympathy and support of the parish community to bereaved families. In November a special Memorial Mass is celebrated for all deceased parishioners from the previous year.

Funeral Breakfasts

St. John the Baptist Parish offers simple funeral brunches for families and friends of deceased parishioners. Brunches are held in our beautiful Reina Community Room after 9:30am funerals or memorial masses. Food is graciously prepared and served by teams of volunteers. The Reina Community Room can accommodate 80 people. There is no charge but a free will offering is gratefully accepted.

Liturgy of the Word for Children

Each weekend, at the 10:00am liturgy, children are invited to the Reina Community Room following the opening prayer. There, teams of presenters read the Gospel in words that the children will understand, discuss the meaning of the Gospel, pray a child’s version of the Creed, and lead the children in praying for their own intentions. This gives the children the opportunity to hear scripture on their own level and to talk about what it means in their lives. It also gives the parents the opportunity to listen with an adult ear, to the scriptures and homily, without interruption. Volunteers make up the teams. Additional helpers are always needed.

Church Care

This group oversees and facilitates the cleaning of the sanctuary, church, sacristy and confessionals. Volunteers clean vestments and albs as needed; care for altar cloths and all other linens; keep holy water fonts clean and filled and other jobs to keep the church environment beautiful.
